Great day for some fieldwork at beautiful Ashfield Flats, WA!

The Ashfield Flats Reserve is as an important social, economic and ecological asset for the City of Perth, its community, and the broader Swan River estuarine ecosystem.

We studied pollutant levels in soil, sediment and water samples, collected in 2019 from the reserve. One of the variables we focused on was cadmium: a heavy metal – non-essential and non-beneficial to living organisms – which is typically associated with road runoff, fuel, gas, lubricating oil products, tyre and brake wear (Davies et al., 2000). The objective of the study was to assess the level of a variety of contaminants in soil, sediments and water, against existing guidelines.
